Greener North Huntingdonshire

We Have the Power to Impact Our Future, and We’re Doing Something About It

Climate change poses an existential threat to the Earth and its inhabitants. Climate change can lead to sea level rise, more frequent and severe weather events, and disruptions to agriculture and ecosystems, all of which can have negative impacts on human health and the economy. Additionally, climate change can have a disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations, such as the poor and the elderly. By reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and taking steps to adapt to the changes that are already happening, we can help protect the Earth and its inhabitants from the worst effects of climate change.

Social Echo is building the first of a network of mutually supporting and self-sustainable centres across the region with a shared purpose to build future-focused social and environmental solutions in the face of the Climate Emergency. Each Climate Emergency Centre (CEC) is led by and focused on the community that it serves but also has the knowledge, expertise, and resources of the wider network. CECs are public spaces that offer a range of support and services to their community and environment.

North Huntingdonshire Climate Emergency Centre is based in the village of Yaxley and shares the hub with Social Echo North Huntingdonshire CIC, an innovative non-profit organisation on a mission to dismantle poverty by harnessing the potential of social trading. Together with the North Huntingdonshire CEC, the hub aims to create a greener Huntingdonshire, drive and support social green trading, upskill and inspire the community to tackle social and ecological crises and find collaborative solutions across the public, private and third sector.

Quick Greener Tips
  1. Reduce your energy consumption by using energy-efficient appliances, turning off lights and electronics when not in use, and using natural lighting whenever possible.
  2. Use environmentally-friendly cleaning products and avoid harsh chemicals, which can pollute the air and water.
  3. Recycle and compost household waste to reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills.
  4. Plant trees or other vegetation to provide shade, reduce air pollution, and improve air quality.
  5. Use environmentally-friendly transportation options, such as walking, biking, or taking public transit, to reduce your carbon footprint.
  6. Support environmentally-friendly businesses and products, and avoid purchasing items with excessive packaging or that are made from unsustainable materials.
  7. Educate yourself and others about the importance of protecting the environment, and encourage others to adopt environmentally-friendly practices in their own households.

The sad truth is that we’ve made a mess of our world. We cannot pass the buck to our children to clean it up. Forget the dreams of some billionaires. There is no planet B. It is only by investing in Planet Earth that we can safeguard our future. It’s time for the world to adopt an ambitious biodiversity framework — a true peace pact with nature — to deliver a green, healthy future for all.
